This Saturday, Avondale Elementary School will be building a playground awarded to them by KaBoom!, a national non-profit encouraging active play for children. The school is looking for volunteers to help with the build project, according to a city newsletter.

Back in August, KaBoom awarded the park to the Avondale Elementary School Education Foundation, which had to raise $9,000 in matching funds. KaBoom worked with the AES community to help design the playground.

According to the newsletter, a total of approximately 200 volunteers from General Motors, Avondale Elementary School, DeKalb County Public Schools, the Avondale Elementary School Foundation and KaBOOM! are needed to build the playground. Volunteers with all levels of skill or ability can participate.

The build project will take place on Saturday, Nov. 3, beginning at 6 a.m. at Avondale Elementary School, located at 10 Lakeshore Drive in Avondale Estates, but there will also be volunteer opportunities on the day before. Breakfast, lunch and water will be provided, as will gloves and other safety materials.

Additionally, the playground build will happen rain or shine. Closed-toe shoes are required, and secure storage is not available on site, so the city recommends that valuables are left at home.

Children are not allowed on the build site, but there will be a kids zone for children 5 and older with games and activities.  Those who plan to bring kids should register the child and fill out a waiver on their behalf.

According to the city, the build schedule is as follows:
