The Comet Pub & Lanes opened in 2016, taking over the space that formerly housed Suburban Lanes.

It is owned by Ethan and Uri Wurtzel, the owners of Twain’s in Decatur, and Ben Horgan.

“We’re a bowling alley with first-rate pizza and pub food and a great bar, featuring local and regional beers and wonderful cocktails,” Uri Wurtzel said. “We host casual bowling leagues seasonally, and book parties big and small.”

From the late 1950’s until spring of 2015, Suburban Lanes was a mainstay in the Decatur community, a place where many longtime residents gathered for fun, recreation, and friendly competition. When Suburban Lanes closed, this vintage bowling alley was in danger of being permanently retired.

“We welcomed the opportunity to spruce things up and reopen the alley as The Comet, maintaining its old-school feel while updating its amenities,” Wurtzel said. “As owners of Twain’s in downtown Decatur (est. 1996), we appreciate the value of welcoming, fun, and person-powered businesses that add to our unique and dynamic community.”

Comet Pub & Lanes allows reservations of parties of up to 30 people via its website, www.cometpubandlanes.com. People interested in booking lanes for bigger groups can email General Manager Jess Welch at [email protected].

Wurtzel said Comet Pub & Lanes appreciates the forum Decaturish provides for the community.

“As a local business with longstanding roots in the greater Decatur community, we very much appreciate reliable, thoughtful news coverage that focuses on things that matter to us all,” he said. “Decaturish provides information and perspective on issues that affect the area, as well as a forum for community members to share their own viewpoints or concerns.”
