The city of Decatur has purchased a piece of property at 252 South Columbia Drive.

Decatur’s Development Authority authorized the purchase in August. The purchase price is $1.9 million. The seller was Redhead Properties LLC and the site was previously the home of Interstate Battery Company. Assistant City Manager Lyn Menne said the property needed some minor environmental cleanup and the seller agreed to help cover the costs.

The city closed on the sale in January.

“This purchase was made in order to manage how this entryway into the East Decatur district is used and allow for the possible use of a portion of the property for green space,” Menne said. “No final plans for the property have been made at this time.”
