An attempt to purchase a car ended in an armed robbery on Friday, March 22, according to Decatur Police.

In a Facebook post, officers said they responded to a call about gunfire in the 200 block of Robin Street around 11:41 p.m.

“Officers met with a male and female who reported they were just robbed and the suspect fired gunshots, but nobody was struck or physically injured,” the Police Department said in a Facebook post. “The male victim stated he picked up a repaired vehicle earlier in the day but needed someone to drive his second vehicle back home. He met a 17-year-old male while in a nearby restaurant and allowed the teen to drive the second vehicle back home for him.”

The victim drove the teenager back to the place where they met. They traded phone numbers, the police department said. Later, the victim got a call and texts from the teenager about a vehicle for sale, police said.

“The male victim decided to meet the teen to look at the vehicle and see if it was worth purchasing,” the Police Department said. “A female friend met up with the male victim in the 200 block of Robin Street where he was supposed to meet the teen and look at the vehicle that was for sale. Upon arriving, the teen told the male victim not to get out and look at the vehicle because his mother was nearby but the teen asked for the money. The male victim requested to test drive the vehicle and after the teen denied the test drive, the male victim began to drive away but noticed the teen waving for him to return.”

When the victim came back, he got out of his vehicle after he saw the teenager holding a key.

“As the teen attempted to open the door to the vehicle, a second unknown male armed with a handgun appeared and fired the gun towards the male victim’s feet as he ran away,” the Police Department said. “The teen suspect then ran to the male victim’s vehicle, reached in and took the female victim’s purse and fled the scene.”

The armed suspect told the victim to get on the ground, fired three or four more shots, checked the victim’s pockets, then ran away. No one was injured.

Police provided the following descriptions of the suspects:

Suspect #1: Black male, approximately 17-years-old, approximately 5’8” and 160 lbs., slender build, dark complexion, short hair, wearing a white shirt and black hat.

Suspect #2: Black male, late teens-early 20’s, approximately 5’10’ and 160 lbs, medium build, wearing a black sweater and black and armed with a handgun.

“If you have any additional information, please contact Inv. Edwards at [email protected] or 678/553-6664 or contact Crime Stoppers Greater Atlanta at 404 577-Tips (8477) and remain anonymous,” the Police Department said.
