City of Decatur receives nearly 200 applications to fill assistant city manager job

The Decatur City Commission’s decision to promote Andrea Arnold to be the next city manager created an opening for an assistant city manager.
Arnold recently told Decaturish that the city received 174 applications to fill that position.
The assistant city manager will oversee finance, human resources, information technology and municipal courts.
“Candidates for the Decatur Assistant City Manager position must have five to seven years increasingly responsible experience in local government,” the job description says. “Experience in budget development and oversight, human resources and information technology is highly valued along with a commitment to strategic planning, excellence in customer service and a desire for ongoing innovation in local government service delivery. In addition, candidates must have strong project management skills, a record of taking initiative and a management and leadership style that reflects collaboration and team building. Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree in public administration, business administration or related field. A master’s degree in public administration, business administration or other field is highly valued. Residency in the city of Decatur is not required.”
The salary range is $95,000 to $125,000.
When she was asked how soon she would like to fill the position, Arnold said, “Yesterday.”
“If we’re lucky, it will April at the latest,” Arnold said. “It’ll be filled by May.”
Arnold said she’s bee handling her old job responsibilities as well, but she’s had some help from city staff.
“We have a strong team,” Arnold said. “Everybody has stepped up.”
