Drew seniors celebrate graduation, accomplishments with senior walk event
Late last month, graduating seniors from East Lake’s Charles R. Drew Charter School, ranked as the top high school in Atlanta Public Schools, celebrated their upcoming graduation with a walk from the Senior Academy down to the Elementary Academy in their caps and gowns.
Comprised of 84 seniors, the Class of 2019 has earned college acceptances to date from nearly 90 colleges and universities, including Harvard, MIT and Dartmouth, according to a school press release.
As part of the senior walk, the graduating class walked through the hallways of the elementary, junior and senior academies, where current students, faculty and staff were waiting to congratulate them.
Drew Charter School is “part of the holistic efforts in East Lake to break the cycle of poverty using cradle-to-college education, mixed-income housing and community wellness,” the release said.
In addition to elementary, middle and high school students, approximately 150 members of the East Lake community and Drew Charter School family attended the senior walk.
“Drew Charter School’s senior walk has become an extremely meaningful tradition over the past few years,” Rachel Weaver, director of college and career readiness at Drew Charter, said. “This event is truly a visual reflection of Drew’s cradle to college pipeline. To see an entire community of students, families and stakeholders come together each year is such a powerful expression of support and love for our graduating seniors.”
