Reports of shots being fired in downtown Decatur over the weekend led to one arrest.

Police Lt. Jennifer Ross said shots were reported at two different locations. No one was injured.

“On May 19, 2019 at approximately 12:28 a.m., Decatur Police responded to the 1500 block of Commerce Drive in reference to discharging of a firearm,” Ross said. “Officers canvassed the area and spoke to a witness who heard gunshots and observed a male running from the area. The witness provided a detailed description of the male seen running from the area after the shots were heard. Shortly after, officers observed a male fitting the description provided walking on West Trinity Place at Swanton Way.

“The male stated he heard the discharging of firearms and fled. A warrant check revealed the male had an active warrant out of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office for a failure to appear. The male was taken into custody for the warrant.  Another witness reported hearing multiple gunshots coming from the area around the mailboxes in the 400 block of Electric Avenue. Officers located shell casings and damage to a stairwell consistent with gunshots in the 400 block of Electric Avenue. Officers then met with another witness who stated he had a verbal altercation with three unknown males moments before the gunshots and he believed one of the males was responsible for the gunshots but he did not see anything, only heard the shots. No injuries were reported.”
