On June 1, Block Captain registration will open, kicking off the six-week period dedicated to recruiting volunteers for Oakhurst Porchfest, which is on October 12, 2019.

According to a press release, “Preparations for this year’s Oakhurst Porchfest get formally underway today as Block Captain registration, the first step towards amassing the nearly 1,000 volunteers who’ll ultimately power the event, launches at www.oakhurstporchfest.org.”

The Block Captain program started last year when the Decatur Police Department proposed adding a way for police and event organizers to better oversee Porchfest events throughout the Oakhurst neighborhood.

The festival has been divided into 32 zones in Oakhurst. Block Captains “ensure general order, keep volumes in check, and alert the police in the event of an emergency,” according to the press release.

“It’s like having a local organizing committee doing their own thing on each street,” Oakhurst Porchfest founder, Scott Doyon, said in the press release, “maybe making Porchfest a little different each place you go.”

A separate registration will open in July for those interested in hosting or performing.
