Decatur Police say a 17-year-old went to the hospital on Friday, June 7, after being hit by a van while walking near Decatur High School.

Police Lt. Jennifer Ross said, “On Friday, June 7, 2019 at approximately 8:44 am, Decatur Police responded to an accident involving a pedestrian and a vehicle in the 200 block of North McDonough Street. The vehicle, a Ford Econoline van, was traveling northbound on North McDonough Street. The pedestrian was standing on the east side curb about 4 or 5 feet away from a crosswalk with his back to the roadway when he stepped backward and turned and was struck in the arm by the side mirror of the passing van. The pedestrian fell to the ground and sustained a laceration to one of his legs. The pedestrian was transported to an area hospital for evaluation. No citations were issued.”

Ross said the victim was, “speaking to someone else, then turned to cross the street” before the van hit him.
