After four years, Decatur High School Principal Arlethea Williams will be leaving her post to take a new position as assistant principal at Talley Street Upper Elementary.
Talley Street will open its doors this fall.
An email from Executive Director of Schools Maggie Fehrman said Williams requested the transfer. She will be succeeded by current Assistant Principal Wes Hatfield.
Here is Fehrman’s email to parents about Williams’ decision to leave DHS:
Ms. Williams, DHS Principal, has requested and been granted a transfer to the position of Assistant Principal at Talley Street Upper Elementary School. She has served as Principal of Decatur High School for the last four years, Assistant Principal for seven years, and Dean of Students for two years. Ms. Williams also taught science at DHS for 10 years. I appreciate Ms. Williams’s many years of dedicated service to the students of this District and am pleased she will continue that commitment in her new role at Talley Street.
As per our succession plan, Wes Hatfield, current Assistant Principal at DHS, has been named interim principal effective June 10, 2019. Mr. Hatfield graduated from DHS and has been a teacher, IB Coordinator, and Assistant Principal at Decatur High School since 2006.
Given the time of year, it is not feasible to post and fill this position, so I will initiate the search for a permanent principal in late fall 2019. I look forward to working with the DHS School Leadership Team to develop a robust selection process, including staff, parent, and student focus groups. Details about the selection process will be shared once available.
Dr. Maggie Fehrman
Executive Director of Schools
