Our months-long investigation into why the city of Decatur banished King of Pops from the Square wasn’t cheap. By my own rough estimation, the series cost us more than $1,000. That cost includes the $461 paid for the records that formed the backbone of the series, as well as the money allocated for paying freelancers for extra stories so I could devote most of my attention to the series.

Our 559 (and counting) paid subscribers have helped to make this work possible.

It’s worth noting that the advertisers that support us are also supporting true community journalism, written without fear or favor. Please remember that when you’re deciding which businesses to support in our community.

But it takes a mix of both advertising money and subscriber money to make local journalism work. Thanks to our subscribers, we have been able to fully staff a number of public meetings, including the Decatur Planning Commission, Decatur Development Authority and School Board. We’ve also been able to expand our coverage of Avondale Estates, Kirkwood and Tucker.
