A week before DeKalb County Schools students return to class, the school district has placed the principal of DeKalb School of the Arts on paid administrative leave while it investigates allegations against a teacher.

“A report of inappropriate contact between a former teacher and a student at DeKalb School of the Arts is currently under investigation,” school system spokesperson R. Scott Belzer said. “The way the report was handled is being investigated as well. During this process, the teacher resigned. The principal is on paid administrative leave and is retiring. The investigation into these reports is at a very early stage.”

The principal of the school is Susan McCauley. The teacher has not been identified.

Belzer said the school district is prohibited from getting into too many details.

“Our students’ safety is our top priority and we take very seriously anything that doesn’t uphold that standard,” he said. “All parties are cooperating with DCSD officials and authorities. It is a sensitive subject to investigate. Part of the investigation is to confirm the facts and timing outlined in the report. We are working diligently to do so and wanted to inform our community accordingly. We are committed to taking the necessary and appropriate steps once the facts are determined.”

DeKalb School of the Arts has been ranked among the best high schools in the state.
