On Aug. 31, at 7 p.m., the Decatur Prevention Initiative is hosting a candlelight vigil, “A Time To Remember, A Time To Act” in observance of International Overdose Awareness Day.

The vigil will be held on the lawn of Decatur Presbyterian Church, located at 205 Sycamore Street in Decatur.

According to a recent press release, International Overdose Awareness Day is observed across the world every year on Aug. 31. The event “seeks to create better understanding of overdose, reduce the stigma of drug-related deaths, and create change that reduces the harms associated with drug use.”

The vigil will include a few personal stories, a musical tribute, and a community display created with pictures provided by attendees.

“Addiction impacts us all. Join us as we remember those who have died from this disease,” Decatur Prevention Initiative Executive Director Terrie Moore said in a recent press release. “It is time to break the stigma associated with addiction. There is hope and recovery, but we have to bring addiction out of the shadows and into the light. Come light a candle with us.”
