This Thursday, Oct. 10, two attorneys from the law firm Smith, Gambrell & Russell, LLP, will give a public presentation of the sexual health and safety of people with disabilities.

According to the event organizers, the two presenters – Kristen Lewis and Emma Barry – will address the scope of sexual abuse of people with disabilities. They will share anecdotes from clients who volunteered to be interviewed on this subject and highlight the factors associated with an increased risk of abuse among persons with disabilities.

Additionally, the presentation will discuss signs that show possible abuse has occurred and describe how to create and implement an “Individual Response Plan” to help minimize the risk that such abuse will occur.

The presentation will take place at the Wilson Center, located at 125 Electric Ave. in Decatur, from 6:15 p.m. until 7:15 p.m.

Anyone can attend, but the event organizers “highly recommend” that families of middle and high school students attend.
