The new Kirkwood Dog Park at the east end of Gilliam Park will open on Friday, Nov. 15.

The Kirkwood Dog Park Committee says, “The half acre plot of land sits in part of Gilliam Park, next to the community garden and adjacent to the Eastside Trolly PATH trail and the Arizona Avenue soccer fields. The large, shaded area hosts two secure fenced-in yards for both small and large dog sizes and features a custom made double-dog water fountain.”

Parties responsible for creating the park include the City of Atlanta Parks and Recreation Department, Atlanta Urban Development, Neighborhood Planning, Council member Natalyn Archibong’s office, the Kirkwood Neighbors’ Organization and the Kirkwood Business Owners’ Association.

“We are so lucky to have such a new, beautiful park,” dog park committee member Emily Wimbush said in a press release. “We have so many dogs in this area; with dog-centric and dog friendly businesses here, it only makes sense to have it in a highly walkable, beautiful and historic neighborhood like Kirkwood.”

There are plans to construct a stone retaining wall, put in additional seating areas, install some public art and some agility equipment. Community members will be asked to pitch in by attending committee meetings, fundraising events and clean-up days. The park will be open daily from sunrise to sunset. There’s parking at the Gillam Park Parking lot on the west side of the park.
