This transmission electron microscope image shows SARS-CoV-2—also known as 2019-nCoV, the virus that causes COVID-19—isolated from a patient in the U.S. Virus particles are shown emerging from the surface of cells cultured in the lab. The spikes on the outer edge of the virus particles give coronaviruses their name. Public domain image obtained via https://www.niaid.nih.gov/news-events/novel-coronavirus-sarscov2-images

Atlanta, GA – The state of Georgia’s confirmed COVID-19 cases increased by 863, bringing the total to 13,315 as of noon, April 13.

Deaths appear to be growing slower than the infection rates. Yesterday there were 433 recorded deaths. Today there are 464, including 14 in DeKalb County. The state Department of Public Health’s latest figures also indicate that there may be some wait time before the state officially attributes a death to COVID-19. On April 11, a Decatur man passed away at Emory Decatur Hospital due to COVID-19. He was 48. His death does not appear to be reflected in the April 13 report.

Hospitalizations also appear to be slowing. Yesterday, there were 2,505 people hospitalized for COVID-19 in Georgia. Today, there are 2,589.

The numbers here were provided by the state Department of Public Health and are presumed to be accurate.

In related COVID-19 news, Gov. Brian Kemp announced that the Georgia World Congress Center would become a makeshift hospital for COVID-19 patients.

Here’s the full announcement:

Atlanta, GA – The State of Georgia has executed a contract with PAE to build a 200-hospital bed alternate care facility at the Georgia World Congress Center (GWCC).

“Across Georgia, we have partnered with existing healthcare infrastructure to greatly expand our surge capacity, and now we have a dedicated team building out a temporary facility at the Georgia World Congress Center for potential COVID-19 patient surge,” said Governor Kemp. “We are working around the clock to prepare for future needs and ensure the health and well-being of our state. I am truly honored to have Georgia’s best, brightest, and most dedicated public servants working on this critically important project.”

Starting immediately, the Georgia National Guard, Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency, Department of Community Health, Department of Public Health, and contractors will begin to prepare GWCC for potential COVID-19 patient surge for mild to moderate (non-ICU) illness levels excluding ventilator support.

The team will utilize contract medical staffing to prepare for surge leading up to the state’s projected peak date, currently set for April 26, 2020 according to IHME. This project at GWCC will leverage existing support through nearby Grady Memorial Hospital with initial operating capacity available in one week. Over the next few days, Governor Kemp will provide more details as construction gets underway.

Coronavirus symptoms can appear two to 14 days after exposure and include:

– Fever

– Cough

– Shortness of breath

The CDC says the following symptoms require emergency medical attention:

– Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath

– Persistent pain or pressure in the chest

– New confusion or inability to arouse

– Bluish lips or face

Here are the recommendations on coronavirus prevention from the DeKalb County Board of Health:

– Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

– Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.

– Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

– Stay home when you are sick.

– Cough or sneeze into your elbow or use a tissue to cover it, then throw the tissue in the trash.

– Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
