Briarlake Elementary Students use bake sale to give back

Greater Decatur, GA — Four students at Briarlake Elementary School are using their baking skills to give back to the community, a press release said.

Third-graders Maddie Benedict and Cypress Smith, fourth grader Emily Coil and fifth grader Eva Smith conducted a bake sale to buy art supplies for the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at Egleston Hospital in Atlanta. The center treats children, teens and young adults with childhood cancer and blood disorders. Briarlake Counselor Raylene Lowe said the students took the initiative on their own to help others.

“The girls planned, baked, and ran the entire project by themselves,” Lowe said. “The project was so successful they sold out of baked goods after about two hours and started baking again to have inventory. At one point they were selling cookies hot from the baking sheet.”

The girls sold $332 in baked goods. The girls’ parents took them to Michael’s and Dollar Tree to buy the art supplies for the and Blood Disorders Center. Some of the items they purchased were markers, construction paper and multiple craft kits. Lowe said they worked as a team to select the items, work within their budget, use coupons, and look for the best value for their dollar.

“Not only was this a valuable lesson in helping others, it was a lesson in teamwork and math,” Lowe said. “They are planning another bake sale soon for another charity.”
