Tucker, GA — Tucker High School’s 2021 graduating class is being offered a COVID-19 vaccination, thanks to a partnership between a locally-owned pharmacy and the city of Tucker.

The pharmacy, which asked to remain anonymous, received a shipment of Moderna vaccines and approached the city to team up for distribution. City administrators are offering the vaccine to THS’s 350 high school seniors at Tucker Recreation Center on April 20. The special event is not open to the public.

“A lot of colleges and universities are requiring their incoming freshman to be fully vaccinated in order to receive in-person instruction, and/or live on campus. Last year we gave our graduating seniors a virtual prom, and this year we are giving them a shot,” said Tucker communications manager Sonja Szubski.

Last week, NPR reported that colleges are increasingly requiring students to be vaccinated before returning to campus this fall.

Moderna is approved for adults age 18 and up. Szubski said first and foremost, vaccines will be offered to the high school students but if extra vaccines are available the city may extend the offer to family members.

Getting the vaccine is an opportunity to protect yourself and others, said Szubski. This is an easy, free opportunity to receive a shot.

“This vaccine is a key to success in their future, mainly at college and university,” she said.

Mayor Frank Auman announced at City Council meeting on April 12 that city staff and recreation league coaches are encouraged to get vaccinated through a similar event. Many staff members have already been vaccinated, said Szubski.
