Decatur, GA – A 2019 graduate of Decatur High School is the most recent recipient of a 2021 Delta Community Scholarship for Students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), a press release said. In an online ceremony this week, Leslie Cox was awarded $2,500 to continue her studies at Spelman College.

The 20-year old college junior is majoring in Political Science, and minoring in Public Health, with a career goal of becoming an attorney.

“Given the ongoing economic impact of COVID-19, we are especially grateful for opportunities in 2021 to reward hard-working students, so they may focus on their academic and career goals,” added Delta Community CEO Hank Halter. “It is our hope that scholarship recipients like Leslie will continue investing in their own communities and causes that are important to them.”

In 2020, through her involvement in the Spelman NAACP, Leslie engaged students in the political process by supporting voter education and outreach initiatives during the 2020 Presidential Election. She remains involved in many community and school groups at Spelman, including as a Student Success Peer Lead, where she advises and mentors freshmen students.

Leslie is the third student to receive a 2021 Delta Community HBCU Scholarship. The fourth and final scholarship will be awarded after a contest that will be broadcast Oct. 4 – Oct. 24 on Atlanta radio station V-103.
