Decatur High grad dies after being struck by vehicle in Avondale Estates

Avondale Estates, GA — A Decatur High graduate died over the weekend after being struck by a vehicle in Avondale Estates.

The crash occurred on Friday, Jan. 14.

Avondale Estates provided few details about the incident. It occurred on U.S. 278, known locally as North Avondale Road / Covington Highway, near the intersection with Stratford Road. The driver hit Shelby Long, who was in the street at the time, according to a police report provided by the city.

“Medical assistance is being provided to all parties,” a spokesperson for the city of Avondale Estates said. Long and the driver who hit her received medical assistance at the scene. “The scene and details are under investigation.”

On Monday, Jan. 17, the city spokesperson confirmed Long had passed away.

“She was transported to the hospital and unfortunately succumbed to her injuries,” the spokesperson said.

The driver was not cited.

According to her Facebook profile, Long graduated from Decatur High in 2019 and attended the University of Mississippi – Ole Miss. This story will be updated when more information is available.
