Tucker, GA — The installation of sidewalks on Henderson Road in Tucker remains on hold due to a conflict between new stormwater drains and existing water lines.

In March 2021, the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners approved a change order “to allow for the excavation of numerous additional test holes to better determine the locations of utilities that are in conflict with proposed storm drain systems along Henderson Road.” In December, the BOC extended that contract for six more months.

The contract includes sidewalks on Flat Shoals Road, Salem Road and Henderson Road.

Tucker City Engineer Ken Hildebrandt said in a video the sidewalk project took several years to begin construction due to a stall in federal funding. He said the county is now trying to figure out the most cost effective way to correct the conflicts.

HOST (Homestead Option Sales Tax) and SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax) funds are covering the cost of the sidewalk project, which was originally approved for $6 million.

“We look forward to the completion of that project,” said Hildebrandt.
