Atlanta, GA — As Atlanta Public Schools plans to go “mask optional” on Tuesday, the school district on Monday, Feb. 28, said school buses would also be mask optional.

When APS on Feb. 25 announced that its campuses would be mask optional as of March 1, the district said the masks would still be required on buses.

But APS now says masks will no longer be required on buses.

“Due to additional guidance from the CDC eliminating the federal mask requirement for school buses effective immediately, when Atlanta Public Schools shifts to a mask-optional environment beginning tomorrow  (Tuesday, March 1), the district will also extend the mask optional protocol to all school buses and transportation,” a spokesperson for the school district says.

Other school districts are giving up their mask mandates as COVID-19 cases continue to fall. City Schools of Decatur announced plans to lift its mask mandate as of March 1, though the district says masks will still be “strongly recommended.”

DeKalb County Schools is expected to make an announcement about its COVID-19 mitigation measures this week. It’s unclear whether the DeKalb County School District will also lift its mask mandate.
