DeKalb County, GA — Various events are happening this week in and around DeKalb County, including a tree seedling giveaway at Legacy Park to celebrate Arbor Day, an artist market at Waller’s Coffee Shop and author talks hosted by the Georgia and Louisiana Centers for the Book as well as Little Shop of Stories. Several local government meetings are also scheduled for this week.

The Obama Portraits Tour 

The five-city tour of the Obama portraits will travel the country until May 2022. The exhibit has been traveling since June 2021 and is expected to reach millions of people. The portraits will be at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta until March 20. The exhibit will feature audiovisual elements, Portrait Gallery-led teacher workshops, curatorial presentations, and a richly illustrated book. Due to a high demand for this exhibition, an exhibition-specific ticket is required for all visitors.

KAWS Prints

Artist KAWS made his first screenprints in the late 1990s and has since continued his printmaking practice alongside his production of paintings, sculpture and editioned objects. KAWS brings into conflict and accord the worlds of fine art, industrial design, technology and popular culture. KAWS Prints is the first comprehensive exhibition featuring the artist’s entire output of editioned prints spanning more than 20 years. The exhibition is on view at the High Museum of Art until March 27.

“And I Must Scream”

The Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University will present a thought-provoking exhibition on Jan. 29. “And I Must Scream” was developed by Dr. Amanda H. Hellman, the museum’s curator of African art. The show will feature photographs, paintings, sculptures, drawings and site-specific installations from 10 local, national and international contemporary artists. The work acts as a call-to-action and shows these crises to be urgent and interconnected. The accompanying programming will bring scholars and artists to teach classes, facilitate performances and create new works of art. The exhibition closes May 15.

Tucker Constituent Conversations 

Tucker City Council member Alexis Weaver will be joined in conversation by Dr. Sandra Valenciano, DeKalb Board of Health district health director on Thursday, Feb. 17, at 1 p.m. via Zoom. The theme of the conversation is Black health and wellness. Valenciano will discuss initiatives of the DeKalb Board of Health to address disparities in healthcare access for the Black community in DeKalb County.

Tucker Farmers Market 

The Tucker Farmers Market will be open on Thursday, Feb. 17, from curbside pickup from 4-6 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 4882 Lavista Road in Tucker. The market features over 35 vendors which include a diverse group of local farmers, bakers, growers and producers from Tucker, metro Atlanta and Georgia. The market is accepting online orders. The online store opens on Thursday afternoons and closes at 3 p.m. on Wednesdays.

Little Shop of Stories Author Event 

Little Shop of Stories will virtually host author Paddy Donnelly to launch his picture book “Dodos are Not Extinct” on Thursday, Feb. 17, at 5 p.m. via Facebook Live. Donnelly will share the secrets of making his book from the art to the story to facts about the animals in the book.

Kirkwood Zoning Public Engagement Opportunity 

Public engagement opportunities related to rezoning the property at 2015 Memorial Drive will be held in Kirkwood this week and next week. Adjoining property owners will meet on Thursday, Feb. 17, at 6:15 p.m. at Kirkyard Public House and Friday, Feb. 18, at 9 a.m. at Taproom Coffee.

Fernbank Audubon Walk 

The Georgia Audubon Society will help guests discover more about the feathered inhabitants of Fernbank Forest on Saturday, Feb. 19, from 9-10:30 a.m. All ages are welcome. Fernbank recommend participants bring binoculars, field guides and water. Masks are required for all attending the walk. These walks have limited capacity, and social distancing will be practiced as best as possible on the trails.

Oakhurst Farmers Market 

The Oakhurst Farmers Market will be open on Saturday, Feb. 19, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Sceptre Brewing Arts, 630 East Lake Drive in Decatur. Find all of your freshest produce, meat, delicious baked treats, and more among the weekly vendors. Additional offerings include live music and chef demonstrations featuring seasonal recipes.

City of Decatur Arbor Day

The city of Decatur is giving away seedlings on Saturday, Feb. 19, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Legacy Park, 500 S. Columbia Drive, to celebrate Arbor Day. The first 200 city residents will receive a free bicentennial tree along with an official bicentennial certificate as part of the 1000 trees by 2023 project. Tree options include Red Oaks, Willow Oaks, Dogwoods, and Virginia Pines. To participate, text 770-686-6279 with a name, address where seedlings will be planted, number and type of trees requested. Pick them up during the drive through event. Seedlings are available on a first come, first served basis.

Waller’s Coffee Artist Market 

Waller’s Coffee is hosting an artist market on Saturday, Feb. 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the coffee shop, 240 Dekalb Industrial Way. Vendors can sign up now, and all types of vendors are welcome. The 10×10 vending spots are available on a first come, first served basis. Vendors will need to bring their own canopy and tables and can set up any time after 8 a.m.

The Three Artistic Directors

The Emory Chamber Musice Society of Atlanta presents “The Three Artistic Directors” as the next Emerson Series Concert on Saturday, Feb. 19, at 8 p.m. at Emerson Hall at the Schwartz Center, 1700 N. Decatur Road. Violinist Linda Rosenthal joins cellist Zuill Bailey and pianist William Ransom for Sonatas of Beethoven and Shostakovich’s powerful Trio in E Minor. All ECMSA programs are free of charge, but registration is required. Masks and proof of vaccination are required for all events in the Schwartz Center.
