DeKalb County, GA — Various events are happening this week in and around DeKalb County, including the 7th annual Love Run 5K, the Decatur City Commission retreat and the Mead Road Mardi Gras parade. Several local government meetings are also scheduled for this week.

Here’s what’s happening this week:

The Obama Portraits Tour 

The five-city tour of the Obama portraits will travel the country until May 2022. The exhibit has been traveling since June 2021 and is expected to reach millions of people. The portraits will be at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta until March 20. The exhibit will feature audiovisual elements, Portrait Gallery-led teacher workshops, curatorial presentations, and a richly illustrated book. Due to a high demand for this exhibition, an exhibition-specific ticket is required for all visitors.

KAWS Prints

Artist KAWS made his first screenprints in the late 1990s and has since continued his printmaking practice alongside his production of paintings, sculpture and editioned objects. KAWS brings into conflict and accord the worlds of fine art, industrial design, technology and popular culture. KAWS Prints is the first comprehensive exhibition featuring the artist’s entire output of editioned prints spanning more than 20 years. The exhibition is on view at the High Museum of Art until March 27.

“And I Must Scream”

The Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University will present a thought-provoking exhibition on Jan. 29. “And I Must Scream” was developed by Dr. Amanda H. Hellman, the museum’s curator of African art. The show will feature photographs, paintings, sculptures, drawings and site-specific installations from 10 local, national and international contemporary artists. The work acts as a call-to-action and shows these crises to be urgent and interconnected. The accompanying programming will bring scholars and artists to teach classes, facilitate performances and create new works of art. The exhibition closes May 15.

International Community School COVID-19 Vaccine Event

The International Community School is hosting a follow-up COVID-19 vaccine clinic where individuals can get their second vaccine dose, as well as their first dose or booster dose, on Wednesday, Feb. 23, from 2-6 p.m. The clinic will have twice as many doses as the first event and will have $100 vouchers available.

Tucker Restaurant Week

The city of Tucker is holding its second annual Tucker Restaurant Week Feb. 23. through Feb. 27. The event will highlight 20 restaurants and there will be special prices and items on the menu throughout the week. The event is a partnership between the city and Discover DeKalb, the city’s convention and visitors bureau.

Decatur City Commission Retreat

The Decatur City Commission will meet on Thursday, Feb. 24, and Friday, Feb. 25 at Brasstown Valley in Young Harris, Georgia, to conduct its annual retreat. The City Commission will do team building exercises, discuss the 2021 priorities report and goals review, hear project updates from city staff, and discuss the commission’s 2022 priorities and goals.

Agnes Scott College Present Wanda’s Monster

Wanda’s Monster is an hour-long musical for young audiences that tells the story of five-year-old Wanda and the monster who comes to live in her closet. The show is free to attend, and tickets are not required. The theater is located in the fine arts building at Agnes Scott College, near the corner of East Dougherty and South McDonough Streets. Guests can park free in the parking deck at 137 South McDonough. The first performances will be held on Thursday, Feb. 24, at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Performances will also be held Friday-Sunday at various times.

Tucker Farmers Market 

The Tucker Farmers Market will be open on Thursday, Feb. 24, from curbside pickup from 4-6 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 4882 Lavista Road in Tucker. The market features over 35 vendors which include a diverse group of local farmers, bakers, growers and producers from Tucker, metro Atlanta and Georgia. The market is accepting online orders. The online store opens on Thursday afternoons and closes at 3 p.m. on Wednesdays.

Decatur Energy Plan Virtual Roundtable 

The city of Decatur is in the process of developing a clean energy plan that will focus on reducing traditional energy sources in Decatur. The city, along with the Southface Institute and Greenlink Analytics, is hosting a series of outreach and education events. The city is hosting a roundtable discussion on Thursday, Feb. 24, from 6-7:30 p.m. that will focus on the built environment.

Daniel Black in conversation with Julian Winters 

Eagle Eye Book Shop and Georgia Center for the Book at DCPL are hosting a Zoom webinar event with author Daniel Black on Thursday, Feb. 24, from 6-8 p.m. He is the author of “Don’t Cry for Me,” the story of a Black father making amends with his gay son through letters written on his deathbed, in this novel of empathy and forgiveness. He’ll be in conversation with young adult author Julian Winters.

Love Run 5K 

DeKalb County District Attorney Sherry Boston is hosting the 7th annual Love Run 5K in commemoration of teen dating violence awareness month on Saturday, Feb. 26, at 8:30 a.m. The race will begin at the gazebo on the Decatur Square. In-person and virtual options are available. Online registration for in-person participation closes on midnight on Feb. 22. Online virtual registration will remain open through Feb. 25. In-person registration will be available on Feb. 25 at Big Peach Decatur for $40 and on race day until 8 a.m. for $45, cash or check only. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Women’s Resource Center to End Domestic Violence.

Oakhurst Farmers Market 

The Oakhurst Farmers Market will be open on Saturday, Feb. 26, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Sceptre Brewing Arts, 630 East Lake Drive in Decatur. Find all of your freshest produce, meat, delicious baked treats, and more among the weekly vendors. Additional offerings include live music and chef demonstrations featuring seasonal recipes.

Waller’s Coffee Artist Market 

Waller’s Coffee is hosting an artist market on Saturday, Feb. 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the coffee shop, 240 Dekalb Industrial Way. Vendors can sign up now, and all types of vendors are welcome. The 10×10 vending spots are available on a first come, first served basis. Vendors will need to bring their own canopy and tables and can set up any time after 8 a.m.

Stone Mountain Village Mardi Gras Parade and Block Party 

The city of Stone Mountain is hosting a Mardi Gras parade and block party on Saturday, Feb. 26, at noon on Main Street. The event will feature live music, the parade, local shopping options, breweries, bars, and restaurants. The parade will begin at 2 p.m.

Mead Road Mardi Gras

Mead Road Mardi Gras will be held on Saturday, Feb. 26, at 1 p.m. The parade begins at Fifth Avenue Upper Elementary School and ends at The Imperial. Those in the parade will toss candy, beads and hand out other swag. After the parade, there will be a festival at The Imperial with Cajun food, beer, hot dogs and live music performances. The event is a non-profit community wide celebration that raises money to support music and arts education in the City Schools of Decatur.

Legacy Park Community Day

Join the Legacy Park staff on Sunday, Feb. 27, from 1-4 p.m. for their winter community day and spend time getting to know the park’s tenants — L’Arche, the Decatur Education Foundation, Frank Hamilton School, Paint Love, Wild Nest, and the Wylde Center. Activities, including puppetry artists The Object Group, will take place throughout the afternoon, culminating in a 4 p.m. table read of plays produced as part of our Introduction to Playwriting workshop.
