DeKalb County, GA — Various events are happening this week in and around DeKalb County, including an in-person town hall event with Sen. Raphael Warnock, a celebration of the A Knight’s Tale exhibit at Fernbank Museum, and a virtual speaker series hosted by the Decatur Parents Network. Several local government meetings are also scheduled for this week.

Here’s what’s happening this week:

Picturing the South: 25 Years 

In 1996, the High Museum of Art began commissioning photographers to engage with and explore the South’s rich social and geographic landscape for its “Picturing the South” initiative. The museum has commissioned 16 artists and built a collection of more than 300 photos as part of the program. To mark the 25th anniversary, the High will create a major exhibit that brings together all the commissions. As a whole, the photos show a complex and layered archive of the region that addresses broad themes from slavery and racial justice to the social implications of the evolving landscape and the distinct and diverse character of the region’s people. The exhibit is on view through Feb. 6.

The Obama Portraits Tour 

The five-city tour of the Obama portraits will travel the country until May 2022. The exhibit has been traveling since June 2021 and is expected to reach millions of people. The portraits will be at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta until March 20. The exhibit will feature audiovisual elements, Portrait Gallery-led teacher workshops, curatorial presentations, and a richly illustrated book. Due to a high demand for this exhibition, an exhibition-specific ticket is required for all visitors.

“And I Must Scream”

The Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University will present a thought-provoking exhibition on Jan. 29. “And I Must Scream” was developed by Dr. Amanda H. Hellman, the museum’s curator of African art. The show will feature photographs, paintings, sculptures, drawings and site-specific installations from 10 local, national and international contemporary artists. The work acts as a call-to-action and shows these crises to be urgent and interconnected. The accompanying programming will bring scholars and artists to teach classes, facilitate performances and create new works of art. The exhibition closes May 15.

Avondale Estates Plastic Film Recycling Program 

The next plastic film recycling day is Wednesday, Feb. 2. Although the Avondale Estates City Hall remains closed, city staff are available Tuesday, Feb. 1 from 1-5 p.m. to distribute plastic film recycling receptacles for residents who wish to participate in the pilot program but don’t have a receptacle yet. Residents picking one up should go to the back door entrance of City Hall and ring the doorbell. A staff member will bring the receptacle outside.

Decatur Parents Network Speaker Series 

The Decatur Parents Network, a subcommittee of the Decatur High School Parent Teacher Student Association, is hosting a speaker series geared toward parents of youth ages 14 and younger. The event will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. via Zoom. Susan Morley, a parenting coach at Parent Coach Atlanta and member of the Decatur Parents Network, will discuss developing a mission for families and a vision for their children. She will talk about how to create a family mission statement and vision for each child. During the webinar, participants will learn how to get on the same page with their parenting partner and learn how to determine what their family stand for and what legacy they want to leave.

Tucker Farmers Market 

The Tucker Farmers Market will be open on Thursday, Feb. 3, from curbside pickup from 4-6 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 4882 Lavista Road in Tucker. The market features over 35 vendors which include a diverse group of local farmers, bakers, growers and producers from Tucker, metro Atlanta and Georgia. The market is accepting online orders. The online store opens on Thursday afternoons and closes at 3 p.m. on Wednesdays.

Virtual Gallery Talk with “And I Must Scream” Artist

Amanda Hellman, curator of the “And I Must Scream” exhibition at the Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University, will introduce a virtual gallery talk with artist-in-residence Ganzeer about the mural he has created for the exhibition. Participants will be given a Vimeo link to the recorded talk to watch, and Ganzeer and Hellman will answer questions after the conversation.

Town Hall with Sen. Raphael Warnock

Sen. Raphael Warnock will hold a town hall on Friday, Feb. 4, at 6 p.m. at the DeKalb County Administration building, 1300 Commerce Drive in Decatur. This will be the first in-person town hall the senator has held with local constituents. He will take questions from the local audience while discussing his first year in office, his work to move the country forward, the progress he’s made to grow jobs and boost economic opportunities, and discuss his legislative priorities. Doors will open at 5 p.m. and admission will be first come, first served. Attendees will be required to wear masks. The event will also be livestreamed on the senator’s Twitter page.

Alzheimer’s Music Fest

The Dementia Spotlight Foundation’s Alzheimer’s Music Fest is returning this year on Friday, Feb. 4 and will start at 6 p.m. The foundation hopes to make an impact on this devastating disease through the event. Funds raised will directly benefit families and individuals living with dementia-related disorders in the community. The 9th annual music fest will be held at Buckhead Theatre, 3110 Roswell Road NE in Atlanta. It will feature performances from 10 homegrown bands, including headliners Cracker, Arrested Development and Drivin N’ Cryin.

Oakhurst Farmers Market 

The Oakhurst Farmers Market will be open on Saturday, Feb. 5, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Sceptre Brewing Arts, 630 East Lake Drive in Decatur. Find all of your freshest produce, meat, delicious baked treats, and more among the weekly vendors. Additional offerings include live music and chef demonstrations featuring seasonal recipes.

Episcopal Society of Saint Anna the Prophet’s superior installation

Episcopal Society of Saint Anna the Prophet’s new superior, Peggy Courtright, will be installed on Saturday, Feb. 5, at 11 a.m. at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, 1790 Lavista Road in Atlanta. The SSAP is a vowed, dispersed community of Episcopal women over the age of 50, many who live in Decatur and DeKalb County.

A Knight’s Tale at Fernbank Museum 

Fernbank Museum is hosting an event on Saturday, Feb. 5, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to celebrate the opening of the new temporary exhibit, Knights in Armor. The special exhibit features more than 100 objects, including full suits of armor, mounted equestrian figures, paintings, helmets, swords and other weaponry. It tells the tale of the European knight from the medieval and Renaissance periods through the Medieval Revival of the 19th century. Activities throughout the event will include a “dragon” animal encounter, knight name bingo and catapults.
