Tucker, GA — It may be just a dirt path now, but in six months Tucker’s first trail segment will be ready for walkers and runners. Construction started on the trail segment 1A behind Corner Cup in downtown Tucker, running from Lavista Road to First Avenue. The finished product will feature a paved pedestrian trail with brick pavers and landscaping.

Tree removal has begun, silk fencing was installed to prevent erosion and grading is next, said City Engineer Ken Hildebrandt. A grant from the Atlanta Regional Commission paid for an engineering design on a path from downtown Tucker to Northlake Mall.

“We’ve got a network of trails shown on our overall masterplan connecting parks, libraries and activity centers,” said Hildebrandt. “This trail will eventually connect northward to Kelley Cofer Park.”

The city is currently seeking bids for engineering design services on the three-mile stretch of Tucker-Northlake Trail from downtown Tucker to Northlake Mall (segments 1B, 1C and 6A) and construction of the Hugh Howell Road multi-use trail.

Hugh Howell Road trail project is an extension of the existing trail from the deceleration lane in front of Smoke Rise Elementary School to Hugh Howell Road at Marthasville Court, about .3 miles. The project includes construction of a new 10-ft. wide trail segment, curb and gutter, stormwater drainage, signage, and landscaping improvements.

During the Master Plan process, Tucker held meetings to determine residents’ top priorities. Walking and hiking trails ranked highest on the list, which includes restrooms at local parks, community gardens, soccer and lacrosse fields, playgrounds, mountain biking trails and dog parks.
