Tucker, GA — Tucker City Council is holding a special called meeting on March 28. Agenda items include voting on two new city ordinances and lighting installation at Fitzgerald Field.

If City Council approves the lighting contract, spending at Fitzgerald Field will reach $1 million. Tucker City Council has already approved $781,000 of spending on Fitzgerald Field for construction plans, fencing and water/sewer repair.

Tucker Parks and Recreation will present a plan to add and upgrade lighting on two baseball fields contracting with MUSCO, Inc. for $322,000. Field 3 has electrical and access issues that need to be address, according to the city.

Lighting at Fitzgerald Field has been budgeted in both FY21 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) and FY22 Capital Improvement funds. Future funding could come from a parks bond referendum, as council members discussed at the recent city retreat.

Fitzgerald Field is located on Lawrenceville Highway. It has been the home of Tucker Football League since the 1970s. The city acquired Fitzgerald Field with plans to renovate the property and create a sports complex. Tucker Football League, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, was in debt approximately $40,000 when the city took over the property, according to records obtained by Tucker Observer.

Tucker denies owing thousands of dollars in unpaid bills, debt assumed when Tucker Football League donated the fields to the city in 2019.
