Tucker, GA — Construction has started on Chamblee Tucker Road after delays due to adjacent roadwork. The project was originally scheduled to begin in April. The road diet is expected to take three to six months from start to finish. 

The road diet is intended to improve the safety of vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists, said Ken Hildebrandt, city engineer for the city of Tucker. 

Hildebrandt presented two safety improvement plans in March 2021. The Tucker City Council approved spending $79,860 from SPLOST funds to create an engineering design in May 2021.

Changes to Chamblee Tucker Road include reducing northbound and southbound lanes to one lane, installation of 14 medians, seven pedestrian crossings, turn lanes, bike lanes and rumble strips. 

A 2021 study of Chamblee Tucker Road from LaVista Road to Tucker Norcross Road showed pedestrian access was insufficient. Most sidewalks are four feet wide, “substandard per ADA guidance” the report states. Most curb cuts at driveways and crosswalks are also not ADA compliant. The current road diet does not address these issues.
