Clarkston, GA — Sen. Jon Ossoff and U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson are expected to attend a World Refugee Day Event in Clarkston this weekend.

The event will be Saturday, June 25, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The Coalition of Refugee Service Agencies (CRSA) is hosting the celebration at Refuge Coffee Co. in Clarkston, “to celebrate and honor the vast contributions that refugees make to our communities and to urge our elected leaders to protect the U.S. refugee resettlement program.”

“In a time when so much of the world is wracked by war and conflict, we come together on World Refugee Day to celebrate the courage and resilience of refugees and to lift up our mutual wish for peace,” the event announcement says. “World Refugee Day is also a day for engaging with our elected officials so that Georgia remains a place of peace and welcome for ALL refugees and immigrants building new lives in our state.”

Here is more information about Saturday’s event provided by The Coalition of Refugee Service Agencies.

The event will feature guest speakers—including Senator Jon Ossoff, Congressman Hank Johnson, State Senator Kim Jackson and Clarkston Mayor Beverly Burks—as well as music and dance performances from diverse community groups. Attendees will also have the opportunity to shop locally from refugee and immigrant business owners at our vendor’s market. You are also invited to help us create a beautiful mandala by contributing individual messages of peace; this will be a unique and heartfelt art piece that will last only as long as the event.

Without the refugee resettlement program, these individuals we are lucky to have as neighbors—who enrich our communities and contribute to our state—would not be here. Now, more than ever, it’s important to celebrate the incredible strength and resilience of the refugee community, and to recognize the invaluable contributions that they bring to our state.
