Clarkston, GA — The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) Atlanta Section and New American Pathways hosted a baby shower on Tuesday, July 12, for over 50 recently re-settled women from Afghanistan, Ukraine and other countries experiencing violence or conflict.

The shower was held at the DeKalb Conference Center, on Georgia Piedmont Technical College’s campus. The two organizations provided new and expecting mothers with a variety of baby items, household items and permanent living situations.

New AP has welcomed more than 400 women, who have been displaced due to the collapse of the Afghanistan government, since October 2021. Many of the women who are granted humanitarian parole by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are new and expecting mothers. New AP has secured permanent housing for each family arriving to the metro Atlanta area. New AP has also equipped each home with furniture, household goods, appliances, culturally appropriate food items and hygiene goods.

“We are grateful to the National Council of Jewish Women for offering to host this event and provide the women and families with gifts that will get them started on a new pathway of life here in Atlanta,” said Nancy Gaddy, chief advancement officer of New AP. “Our mission is to help refugees and their families from the many war-torn areas around the world resettle in the United States and ensure that they thrive here in Georgia.”

Since the found of NCJW in 1893, the organization has been devoted to helping immigrants and refugees, said Sherry Frank, co-president of the NCJW Atlanta Section.

“Our volunteers are honored to be helping Afghan and Ukrainian newcomers,” Frank said. “Additionally, we’re also grateful for the grant we received from Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta to help support this project.”

The event was held with the goal of enabling women to create better futures for themselves and their children in Atlanta through education and a starting point. New AP’s Resettlement and Resource Navigation and Family Empowerment staff provided the women and their families with information and resources.

Additionally, the Georgia State University Prevention Research Center presented healthy parenting tips and COVID-19 vaccination information, and the NCJW also provided each of the women with gifts and goodie bags.
