Stone Mountain, GA —The Stone Mountain Downtown Development Authority has sold the old downtown post office to a coffee roasting company, Java Vino.

“The property, which is located at 5379 E. Mountain Street in Downtown Stone Mountain, is a 5,000 sq. foot building in the heart of the downtown area,” the Development Authority said in a press release.

The DDA reports this is its third successful transaction in recent years. They bought this property in 2018. The DDA fixed the roof, white boxed the interior, made the three bathrooms ADA accessible, did some minor electrical work, and upgraded the HVAC system.

The DDA called Java Vino the “right fit” for the location.

“I’m pleased that Java Vino chose Stone Mountain Village as their new home,” SMDDA Chair Jelani Linder said in a press release. “This relationship and sale shows how the SMDDA can continue to be a catalyst for economic development in the Stone Mountain Village area. We would like to thank our City Council for approving the special use permit, which now allows Java Vino to have a roastery in Downtown Stone Mountain.”

Java Vino is a “mom-and-pop coffee roasting company” owned by Steve Franklin and his wife Huddy Kuhl. The business opened seven years ago and its mission is “to source coffee responsibly.” Their motto is “Seed to Cup.”

“Latte art is great and all, but we’re more concerned with what goes into making each cup,” Franklin said in the press release noting that about 80% of the coffee served in the United States is considered exploitative. “By its nature, coffee is grown by the poor and consumed by the rich…but by making the right choices you can actually make a difference.”

Franklin and Kuhl are looking forward to doing business in Stone Mountain Village, the press release says.
