Clarkston, GA — A new ad campaign is encouraging residents in Clarkston to get their COVID-19 vaccine.

The ad campaign is a collaboration between the Prevention Research Center at Georgia State University and the DeKalb Board of Health. The campaign is called “Get Your Vaccine Today” and posters are being placed at MARTA bus shelters in Clarkston.

“The city of Clarkston, known as the most diverse square mile in America, is a testament to the positive impact that can happen when government, nonprofits, educational institutions, health care, and the community come together,” a press release from GSU says.

The campaign has renewed importance now that updated booster shots are available. On Sept. 1, the CDC endorsed the first updated booster shots that target new variants ahead of an expected surge this fall and winter.

Clarkston Vice Mayor Awet Eyasu said, “I think there is a lot of misinformation out there about COVID-19 vaccinations and a lack of awareness. It’s always good to remind people to get vaccinated, especially our immigrant community,” said Eyasu. “It is also helpful that the messages are multilingual.”

Clarkston already has a higher vaccine rate than its peers, with 70.8% of residents reporting being fully vaccinated compared to 50.5% in “comparable areas,” the press release says. It’s the highest vaccine rate in Georgia among communities that have the same Social Vulnerability Index.
