Atlanta, GA – The Department of Public Health reports that there are now almost 15,000 COVID-19 cases in the state and more than 550 deaths.

In addition, the state has released information about cases at long-term care facilities, like nursing homes, and there have been cases reported at long-term facilities around Decatur. While all information provided in state reports are presumed to be accurate, the Atlanta Journal Constitution notes that the reports on the long-term care facilities contain incorrect information. At a minimum, the report illustrates the location of cases within the readership area, if not the actual number of cases at each facility.

As of noon on April 15, the Department of Public Health reports there are 14,987 COVID-19 cases in Georgia. There are now 2,922 hospitalizations and 552 deaths.

Yesterday at noon there were 14,223 COVID-19 cases, 501 related deaths and 2,769 hospitalizations.

Here is a map the AJC created showing all the long-term care facilities listed in the state report:

In other coronavirus news:

– The DeKalb County Board of Health COVID-19 Call Center is now accepting testing appointments.

Here is the full announcement:

DECATUR, Ga. – As part of Governor Brian P. Kemp’s push to increase COVID-19 testing in Georgia, especially among symptomatic citizens of any age with direct exposure to COVID-19 and their family members, the DeKalb County Board of Health will begin accepting testing appointments immediately.

As a result, the Board of Health’s COVID-19 call center, which provides information related to risks, prevention, symptoms, isolation, community resources and testing; will expand to Saturday operations, from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. The call center is open during the week from 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

Testing criteria will expand to include:

– Hospitalized patients

The following people with symptoms:

– Healthcare workers, first responders, and other critical infrastructure workers

– Persons residing in long-term care facilities or other group residential settings

– Persons 65 years of age and older

– Patients with underlying medical conditions

– Household members or caregivers of any of the groups above

– Persons with close contact with a known COVID-19 case

The following people without symptoms will also be tested as capacity allows:

– Healthcare workers, first responders, and other critical infrastructure workers that have been exposed to COVID-19

– Residents of a long-term care facility or other group residential settings experiencing an outbreak of COVID-19

Anyone meeting the listed criteria that requests testing must call (404) 294-3700, then select Option 1, to schedule an appointment. Residents must be scheduled in order to enter the testing site location.

To protect patient confidentiality and to prevent potential public safety issues and large gatherings, the specific locations for DeKalb County’s two testing sites will only be disclosed once an individual has scheduled their testing appointment.

– The state of Georgia also has a coronavirus hotline.

According to the Department of Public Health:

If you believe that you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 or have been exposed to the novel coronavirus, please contact your primary care doctor or an urgent care clinic. Please do not show up unannounced at an emergency room or health care facility. Hotline:(844) 442-2681

– Bluish lips or face

Here are the recommendations on coronavirus prevention from the DeKalb County Board of Health:

– Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

– Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.

– Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

– Stay home when you are sick.

– Cough or sneeze into your elbow or use a tissue to cover it, then throw the tissue in the trash.

– Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
