Tucker, GA — Tucker Planning Commission met Feb. 18 to reappoint board chairs, hear a first read for a new bank at Northlake and approve changes to city code. The Planning Commission meets the third Thursday of each month. This month, the board met in a hybrid format of in-person and online.

Katherine Atteberry and Michael Thomas were unanimously approved as chair and vice chair, respectively.

City staff presented a first read for a Special Land Use Permit (SLUP) to allow building Center for Disease Control Federal Credit Union, including with a two-lane drive-thru and canopy, at 4816 Briarcliff Road. The lot is currently zoning NL1, Northlake high intensity commercial property. The credit union building will be built in the parking lot near the main entrance of Northlake Mall.

The plan meets all regulations, and city staff does not expect an increase in traffic due to the proposed credit union.

“The proposed development meets the NL1 intent, which is in part to encourage the redevelopment of parking lots into a mix of office and residential uses in the same development,” said city planner Rosie Mafe.

Scott Feurst spoke on behalf of the applicant, who held a public meeting Feb. 6 with seven attendees present.

In 2020, Tucker City Council dissolved the Community Council and put in place a community input process for developers to answer questions from neighbors. Due to COVID-19, most community meetings have moved to a virtual format.

No members of the public spoke in favor or against the SLUP, and the Planning Commission unanimously approved it. The SLUP will be presented to City Council on March 8.

Members of the Planning Commission unanimously approved city staff recommendations to change Chapter 46 of zoning code ordinance TA-21-0001, which defines front, side and back yards of residential property.

Plans to develop Heritage Golf Links are expected to come before the Planning Commission in April. Last August, more than 220 people virtually attended a community meeting with Lennar Corporation. Since then, yard signs have been placed on and around Britt Road in Tucker. Neighbors banded together to stay informed while the proposal to turn a 27-hole golf course into 226 single family homes in Tucker, plus townhomes and mixed-use development on the Gwinnett side of the golf course.
